Winter solstice reflections
As the solstice wraps us in its longest night, it’s hard not to feel the weight of the season. For some, it’s a time of stillness and reflection; for others, it carries the often self-imposed stress of holiday expectations—or it feels downright overwhelming. Whether it’s heavy, quiet, or chaotic, this time of year asks us to pause and reflect on what we’re carrying. It also offers a gentle nudge to unload some of that weight and make space for what truly matters.
For me, this season is about reconnecting—not just with my family in Quebec but also with the people who ground me here: my friends, my loved ones, and my TruroYoga tribe. Although I won’t be teaching again until January 10th, I’m so thankful for the community we’ve built together. I’m looking forward to resuming classes when I return and sharing the connection that yoga brings to our lives.
I’m looking forward to simple things: baking cookies with the kids, doing a puzzle with my grandmother, and setting an intention to play outside. I want to rediscover those moments of childhood magic—the thrill of sledding down a hill, the satisfaction of building a snowman, and the pure joy of not having a care in the world. I want to find that sense of playfulness.
How about you? Are there rituals or practices you want to bring back into your life? Or maybe it’s time to refresh something that feels stale or let go of what no longer feels good.
To celebrate the winter solstice today, I decided to add more colorful Christmas lights around the house and give my altar a little love. I added fresh flowers, photos, and a few objects that inspire me, along with new candles to bring in the light. These are such small things, but together they create a space that reflects what I want to focus on in the months ahead.
So, here’s to moving through this season with a little more intention. Let’s let go of what we don’t need, keep the things that bring us peace, clarity, and FUN, and step toward the light—one small, meaningful step at a time. Happy solstice my friends.
With love and light,
Genevieve
