Fall Newsletter: Transitions, Ratatouille, and Retreats

Longnook Beach in September

September leaves me in limbo every year. Officially it’s still summer until the end of the month, but here on the Cape, we all know better — summer ends on Labor Day. Overnight, the beaches empty out, friends head back to work, students return to school, and the volleyball net at Longnook looks like it’s given up for the season. The sun’s still warm, the water’s inviting, but the game’s over. I used to feel a little abandoned this time of year, like summer just left without saying goodbye.

But lately, I’ve been thinking of these late-September, early-October weeks more like yoga transitions — the up-dog, down-dog, and chaturangas that carry us from one pose to the next. They’re often rushed and mostly overlooked, but they hold the practice together: the moments where we pause, catch our breath, and reset.

That’s how I’ve learned to treat this in-between season — an opportunity to recalibrate, and a vital part of my living yoga. It’s when I finally get to the practical things I’ve been putting off — the doctor’s appointment, the haircut, even vacuuming out all the sand in the car — and balance them with the small rewards that feel sweeter after the swirl of summer: booking a facial, catching live music at the Payomet, and cooking thoughtful meals with what’s still plentiful at the farmers’ market. Fall is here, yes, but I’m not rushing it. For now, I’ll be here soaking in this quieter stretch and chasing the golden days — offering weekly classes at the Community Center and leading our Sunday class on Zoom. Check out the schedule and please join me.

CLASS SCHEDULE

Just as my teaching has its rhythm, so does the year. I’m grateful for the built-in pauses life offers — natural times to recharge — but it’s on us to use them well, to fill them with what sustains us. For me, nothing does that more than travel adventures. In early November, I’ll be leading my sold-out retreat in Argentina… and then reuniting with Paul for some long-awaited downtime together in Patagonia. I love when everything clicks, when the sequence comes together. What about you — a little rest, some travel, something new? I’m starting with Argentina, but I’d love for you to join me on what comes after: Baja this winter, and Georgia in 2026.

I’m leaving you with another recipe — my mother’s ratatouille — plus a playlist pulled from some of the music I played in last summer’s restorative classes on the Pamet, and a shout-out to Valerie June. We saw her last weekend with Paul, Eva, and Lulu (photo proof!) just before she set off on her world tour — if she’s not on your radar yet, she should be.

Here’s to the rhythm of the season,
Love, G

I came to web design and development over 18 years ago when I wanted to get the right look and feel for the web presence of our sustainable shellfish aquaculture business. With a background in marine science and biomechanics and long interest in painting and drawing, I got hooked on the art and tech of web design and the joy of creating a unique web experience for my clients.
