Somehow here we are again…
I know summer is ending because I’m starting to think about shoes and long pants. After months spent mostly barefoot and in yoga shorts and bikini bottoms, I’m looking at tan legs, sun-bleached hair, and calloused feet. And let’s not forget the unmistakable smell of yoga blankets and mats that have been living in my car all summer. Sand everywhere, salt on everything, long days playing hard and teaching outside.
Somehow, here we are again… post-Labor Day, post-volleyball tournament, post- outdoor yoga season.
I still remember my first Labor Day weekend on the Cape and how abrupt it felt. I had gone so hard all summer that when it was suddenly over, I spent the next 48 hours in bed.
After all these years I’ve gotten better at pacing myself. That’s a good thing, because the summer rhythm isn’t quite over for me. In a few days, I’ll be trading my worn-out Rainbows for espadrilles, my stained sun shirts for flowy dresses, and heading to Santorini, where I’ll be teaching two back-to-back retreats.
There’s something particularly sweet about this trip. When Esmé was in middle school, she did a project on Greece that somehow turned into quite the production, complete with a full-on homemade news broadcast. We had a lot of fun making it, although getting the whole thing finished was no small feat. Somewhere along the way, I told her that if she could get through this project and eventually graduate from college, I’d take her to Greece.
Well, she did. And somehow I figured out a way to make good on the deal. When the retreats are over, Esmé will meet me in Athens and we’ll have a week together.
When I get back, the blankets and mats will finally get a good wash, and we’ll settle into our dim and cozy winter den at the Community Center. Fall classes will begin again in October, with Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays back in the mix. You can find the fall schedule here.
And looking a little further ahead, here is what’s on the horizon…
Embodied: The Art of Being Seen A Yoga & Boudoir Photography Experience
Joyful movement, meaningful conversations, sisterhood, and a photography experience that helps you remember something you hadn't lost after all.
A pilgrimage of attention. Walking from Vigo to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, with yoga, reflection, connection, and a prompt to carry with us each day.
For all the fullness of my favorite season, somehow we still managed to make family dinner happen at least once a week. This is what was on the table last week:
Peperonata Potato Salad.
There’s still some summer left, and I plan to soak up every last bit of it while I’m away. Thank you for another beautiful season together. I’ll see you in October, when we’ll find our regular rhythm again.
xo, G
And because I just couldn’t resist… here’s Esmé reporting on Greece all those years ago.
